On July 25, 1863, Gen. John H. Morgan, in command of Confederate troops, passed here and proceeded northward via Dry Fork Valley, at the present site of Bradley and Smithfield, pursued by Gen. James M. Shackelford commanding the 14th Illinois Cavalry, 1st Kentucky Cavalry, 9th Michigan Cavalry, 11th Michigan Battery, 86th Ohio Mounted Infantry, and 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry.
