President Truman visited Main Street during his whistle stop tour, having his train stop in Smithfield so he could walk. With two Secret Service agents, he crossed to the old red brick building across the street, then a general store, and bought a Coke. He strolled up and down Main Street and Snider Street and looked around before boarding a special train called the Magellan to continue his campaign tour. He was headed into Fort Worth to make a public appearance on WBAP-TV, the first live entertainment show in Texas. One of his favorite quotes, kept on a plaque on his desk, was "The buck stops here."
