Stephen Howison, born in 1736 to a family from Cramond, Scotland, and Mary Brooke, born in 1739 to a family from England, married in 1757. Between 1763 and 1769 they came from Maryland to Prince William County and homesteaded this land, where they farmed and raised 12 children. During the American Revolution, Stephen Howison served as a Lieutenant in the Prince William Militia. The property, known as “The Old Homestead,” eventually included 500 acres and remained in the Howison family until the 1930s. Prince William County acquired this 27 acre site for a soccer complex in 1986, and the Howison family cemetery is preserved as a reminder of these early settlers.
