The Memorial Building was erected by the Lincoln Farm Association with funds obtained by popular subscription, mostly from American school children. Designed by John Russell Pope, it was constructed from 1909 to 1911 of Connecticut pink granite and Tennessee marble. Its 56 steps represent a year of Lincoln's life for each step, and its 16 ceiling rosettes symbolize Lincoln as the 16th President of the United States.
