The Big Chicken in Marietta, Georgia, is a KFC restaurant crowned by a 56-foot steel-sided chicken that has become one of the area’s most familiar roadside landmarks and a common reference in local directions. Built in 1963 by restaurateur S. R. “Tubby” Davis for his Johnny Reb’s Chick, Chuck and Shake on a new stretch of Highway 41, it was designed by Georgia Tech student Hubert Puckett and fabricated by Atlantic Steel. Its moving beak and eyes helped make it memorable. After storm damage in 1993, public opposition preserved it through rebuilding, and it remains a working restaurant and notable example of American roadside novelty architecture.
