Port Mercer Canal House, built in the 1830s along the Delaware and Raritan Canal in Lawrence Township, preserves the everyday working life of a canal bridgetender and family. The bridgetender lived here so he could open the swing bridge for passing boats and close it again for road traffic. From about 1900 to 1934, John Arrowsmith, his wife, and their eight children occupied the three-bedroom house, whose family memories include summer sleeping by the canal and winter skating to Trenton. Restored beginning in the 1970s to reflect the 1890s to 1920, the house and surrounding Port Mercer area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
