Before bridges crossed the Dan River, a ferry traveled back and forth here carrying people, wagons, and supplies. In 1781, while early Americans were fighting the British to create the United States, the American Southern army escaped from the British army by crossing the Dan River at this site. The ferry and other boats carried the Americans to this side of the river to safety.
