George Croghan was an Irish immigrant and land speculator who launched one of the largest and most effective British trade networks in America in the 1740s. From his original trading post on this site, he expanded as far as the French-controlled Ohio Country. He learned Native American languages and customs to gain a source for furs, which were in high demand in Europe. For three decades, he was a key negotiator for the British at Indian conferences.
