In 1989, scientists from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory collaborated with a team at the Flerov Institute in Dubna, Russia, resulting in the creation of elements 114 and 116. On May 30, 2012, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry adopted the names Flerovium 114 and Livermorium 116 in recognition of this international effort. On June 24, 2013, this site was dedicated as Livermorium Plaza to commemorate this historic event.
