Abita Mystery House in Abita Springs, Louisiana, is a roadside attraction and self-guided folk art museum created and maintained by artist and inventor John Preble. Inspired by New Mexico’s Tinkertown Museum, it grew from the former UCM, or “you-see-em,” Museum into an elaborate public world of handmade displays and oddities, officially taking its current name in 2007. Its spaces include a vintage gas station, open-air areas, a main hall, a ninety-year-old Creole cottage, the House of Shards, and an Airstream trailer pierced by a flying saucer. Known for whimsical creatures and interactive works, it stands out as one of Louisiana’s most distinctive vernacular art environments.
