Memory Gardens Veterans Memorial honors all veterans who served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America so that Americans could live in freedom, and it remembers forever their courage, sacrifice, and devotion. It is dedicated to those who served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, and especially to those who made the supreme sacrifice in service to their country. Those named include James Doornink of World War I; Bernard M. Vermeer, Arie Moerman, Albert Brunsting, John A. Kempers, Peter De Boer, Gerrit Ter Haar, Charles Aardema, Benjamin Vermeer, Bert Kroon, and David E. Vermeer of World War II; Randall Karl Schutt and Arlin D. Franken of the Vietnam War; and William J. Leusink, who was killed in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The granite markers identify the dead, their family relationships, branches of service, ages, circumstances of death, and burial places, including Sioux Center cemetery and military cemeteries in the United States and overseas.
