Directly ahead are the remains of the fort's powder magazine, a brick structure that stored the hundreds of pounds of black powder used to charge the cannons before firing. It was the most dangerous place in the fort because an accidental ignition or a hit by enemy fire could produce disastrous effects. Retreating Confederate troops destroyed the magazine on May 14, 15 or 16, 1862.
