Culloden Point, a small peninsula near Montauk at the entrance to Fort Pond Bay, is most closely tied to the wreck of HMS Culloden during the American Revolutionary War. In January 1781, the British warship ran aground in a winter storm and, after failed efforts to free it, was stripped of supplies and burned to keep it from Patriot hands. Rediscovered in the 1970s, the wreck has yielded artifacts preserved nearby, while some cannons still lie offshore. The point also figured in the 1839 Amistad seizure and later became part of a notable early 1960s Leisurama housing development.
