In 1828, the Cayuga-Seneca Canal opened in Montezuma, allowing transportation of people and goods into the Finger Lakes and beyond by connecting with the Erie Canal at this site. The Exchange Hotel provided lodging for travelers and was the center of town activities, including town elections and board meetings. Colonel Comfort Tyler built one of the first boats on the Erie Canal, launched in 1820 and named The Montezuma.
