Gen. George Rogers Clark used a route through here in the 1780s called Clark’s War Road, running from Drennon’s Lick to the Ohio River. The place was first called Rislerville, then Liberty Station. In 1874 it was renamed Sanders for “Wash” Sanders, a local citizen active in state politics. In the early 1900s it became a noted resort, where guests came to enjoy the healing waters of nearby wells.
