Off Young's Monument Road, three-tenths of a mile away, is the gravesite of Henry and Lucinda Young. A Confederate militiaman or sympathizer, Henry Young was killed nearby by Union troops on 8 September 1861. Details of his life and death are scant and confused, symbolizing divided loyalties, tragic times, and the enduring saga of the Civil War in West Virginia, when state was pitted against state and brother against brother. A new road in 1970 required reburial.
