Outagamie County honored the memory of local comrades who entered their country's service and gave their lives in World War I. Presented by Oney Johnson Post No. 38 of the American Legion on November 11, 1934, the memorial was restored and rededicated on November 11, 2006 by readers of the Post-Crescent and members of American Legion Post No. 38. Its rededication plaque identifies the figure as Spirit of the American Doughboy, and it was designated an official United States World War I Centennial Memorial and rededicated on the 100th anniversary of the call to service and ultimate sacrifice of Outagamie County's doughboys on Armistice Day and Veterans Day, November 11, 2017. The memorial bears the names of the county's dead from communities including Appleton, Shiocton, Kaukauna, Maple Creek, Grand Chute, Little Chute, Oneida, Center, Seymour, Black Creek, Hortonville, Deer Creek, Leeman, Dale, Bear Creek, Liberty, Maine, Salt Lake City, Greenville, Freedom, New London, Ellington, Buchanan, Darboy, and Kimberly.
