The brush arbor in this area served as a dining place for troops at Fort Blair. While the colored troops were eating lunch there, Quantrill's attackers approached from the east and the south. The troops fought their way through mounted guerrillas to reach the fort, retrieve their weapons, and use expert marksmanship to defend the small camp fearlessly and keep the Stars and Stripes flying above Fort Blair.
