The Rocky Steps are the 72 stone steps leading to the east entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, made world-famous by the 1976 film Rocky, in which Rocky Balboa sprints to the top during training. That scene, shaped partly by practical filming constraints, helped turn the stairway into a major Philadelphia attraction and an early showcase for Steadicam camera work. The broad view from the summit helped make Rocky’s final pose iconic, and visitors still imitate the climb. A long debate over the Rocky statue’s status and placement added to the site’s story, while the steps also became a stage for major civic events, sports culture, and enduring popular ritual.
