On July 22, 1864, Manigault’s brigade of Brown’s division, Cheatham’s Army Corps, Confederate States, attacked this sector, where Martin’s and Lightburn’s brigades were posted astride the Decatur Road and the Georgia Railroad cut. Manigault’s troops broke the Federal line at the cut, forcing the withdrawal of Lightburn and Martin from this sector of Logan’s Fifteenth Corps intrenched line. A counter-assault by Lightburn and Martin, together with Mersy’s Sixteenth Army Corps brigade brought up from the battlefield area south of the railroad, recovered the Federal line and the DeGress battery, which Manigault’s men had seized but had not been able to remove.
