Westmoreland was first settled on land granted to James Dean by the Oneida Indians in 1785. By 1789 settlement accelerated as industries and businesses grew, churches were established, and schoolhouses were built and organized into 17 districts that were later consolidated. By 1792 several hamlets existed in the newly formed township. The town is also known for its contributions in foundry work, producing cast iron products, and is now over 230 years old.
