8 Mile Corner marks the tri-point where Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma meet in the Cimarron National Grassland west of Elkhart, Kansas, and is also associated with the meeting of the West, the Midwest, and the South. First established as a surveyed landmark, it became known for a 1903 local monument called the “windmill,” a mock weather vane topped by a bison silhouette. The tri-point was reestablished in 1990 by the Bureau of Land Management and is identified by survey monuments set below State Line Road. Its remote grassland setting and distinctive wildlife add to the site’s character, and in 2024 a replacement landmark in the style of the older feature was announced.
