Chanticleer Point, on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge, became a destination in 1912 with the opening of the Chanticleer Inn by M.E. Margaret Henderson and A.R. and Mrs. Morgan. Known for chicken and salmon dinners and a strict no-alcohol policy, the inn attracted prominent visitors but burned in 1930. As its role shifted from hospitality stop to scenic overlook, the Portland Women’s Forum, founded to preserve and beautify the gorge, bought the former inn site in 1956 and donated it to the State of Oregon in 1962, securing its future as the Portland Women’s Forum State Scenic Viewpoint.
