On July 18, 1805, as the Corps of Discovery prepared to leave the area, Captain Meriwether Lewis observed a large herd of bighorn sheep on an immensely high, nearly perpendicular cliff opposite the party. He marveled that they walked and bounded from rock to rock on the face of the cliff with apparent unconcern where it seemed no quadruped could have stood. Bighorn sheep were new to Lewis and Clark, and the captains took time to record these animals in their journals. Bighorn sheep still live in the area and may be seen on the cliffs.
