A ring of rocks on this land is a tipi ring, a remnant of American Indian architecture. The Blackfeet who lived in this area, like many other tribes, used tipis as moving homes suited to a nomadic lifestyle. When an encampment was set up, a ring of rocks held the tipis in place. Traditionally, American Indian women constructed and owned tipis. Their sides were generally made of buffalo hides, and a large tipi could require up to 20 hides. The Blackfeet and their relatives, the Piegan and the Blood Indians, still have many beautiful painted medicine tipis and in this respect have the most colorful lodges to be seen today.
