Early Texans knew this place as a one inch flow of water out of rocks, and it served as a camp for travelers and freighters. Occupants of the land around the spring included W. J. Greer, who had a sheep camp in 1882; Francis Winans, who had a cattle and sheep ranch in 1884; and A. O. Burr, who was farming about 1885. Cattlemen, including Frank Gray, camped here during roundups, and outlaws in the 1880s frequented a nearby hut. The Rocksprings Post Office opened in 1891 in a townsite platted for a new county seat at the center of Edwards County. The rock spring still seeps in a city and county historic park and playground.
