At the point where the St. Johns River narrows, a natural crossing was used first by Indians and later by the Spaniards as they pushed west. A Spanish fort built in 1700 protected the crossing and the trail leading to Apalache, near Tallahassee. From 1836 to 1870, a stage line connected with river steamers and ran from this point to St. Augustine.
