In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the National Civil War Museum preserves a large collection on the American Civil War and its aftermath, including veterans’ organizations and the struggles of survival and healing that followed. Opened in 2001 and affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution since 2009, it presents a balanced account of the conflict through exhibitions spanning 1850 to 1876, with emphasis on 1861 to 1865. Its galleries trace the path from sectional crisis and slavery through major campaigns, Gettysburg, naval warfare, women’s roles, Lincoln’s memory, and veterans’ lives. The collection includes more than 24,000 items, among them objects tied to Lee, Grant, Winfield Scott, slavery, battlefield medicine, and the Lincoln assassination.
