Kippax Plantation, on the south bank of the Appomattox River in present-day Hopewell, Virginia, is an important archaeological site in early Virginia history. It is best known as the home of Colonel Robert Bolling and his wife Jane Rolfe, granddaughter of Pocahontas and John Rolfe, and as the birthplace of their son John Bolling in 1676. Believed burial places for Thomas Rolfe, Robert Bolling, and Jane Rolfe add to its significance. Archaeological work beginning in 2002 located Bolling’s house and identified at least four structures from the 17th through 19th centuries, offering evidence for studying early trade, African American slave life, and cultural interaction.
