Campbell Hill, in Bellefontaine, is Ohio’s highest point at 1,549.09 feet, though it is a modest summit formed as a glacial moraine rather than a rugged mountain. Its geology reflects Ice Age processes that also influenced nearby features such as the Mad River and Zane Shawnee Caverns. Known earlier as Hogue’s or Hoge’s Hill, it took its present name after Charles D. Campbell acquired it in 1898. In the Cold War, land around the summit became Bellefontaine Air Force Station, home to an early warning radar unit until 1969. Since 1974, the summit has housed the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center and remains an accessible destination for visitors.
