Helmick Mill Covered Bridge
Transportation
Helmick Mill Covered Bridge, also known as the Island Run Bridge, is a nineteenth-century covered bridge in Deerfield Township, Morgan County, Ohio, near Malta. Built in 1867 by Samuel Price for $872, it carries Township Road 269 over Island Run and is a multiple kingpost through truss measuring 72.2 feet long, with a longest span of 33.1 feet. Rehabilitated in 1991, it preserves a bridge form once common on rural Ohio roads. Its name recalls the small industrial site at this crossing, where by 1880 Joseph "Joe" Helmick owned a flouring mill and a saw mill. In 1999 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
