Canaan Mountain Wilderness is a 44,531-acre protected area in southern Utah near Hildale, established in 2009 along the edge of Zion National Park. Centered on Canaan Mountain, it is defined by the White Cliffs, Vermilion Cliffs, and a slickrock landscape of ridges, hollows, and narrow passageways shaped in Navajo Sandstone. Its varied terrain supports ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, pinyon-juniper woodland, and hanging gardens fed by springs and seeps. Peregrine falcons, mule deer, bighorn sheep, and other wildlife inhabit the area. Faint human traces include possible Ancestral Puebloan and Southern Paiute hunting camps and remains from logging between 1915 and 1928.
