Piketon Mounds in Piketon, Ohio, is a prehistoric earthwork complex notable for combining a prominent graded way with a group of burial mounds. Its age and purpose remain uncertain because the site appears to reflect both Adena and Hopewell traditions: the mounds resemble Adena construction, while the graded way is more typical of Hopewell works. In 1848, Ephraim George Squier and Edwin Hamilton Davis documented a massive engineered ascent between terraces and recorded embankments leading toward four mounds. Part of the site had already been damaged or absorbed into a cemetery, yet the surviving earthworks still make it one of southern Ohio’s more unusual archaeological sites.
