At the eastern edge of the Memorial Plaza, a small visitor shelter provides protection from the weather and a place to leave messages. The black walkway and sloped wall of the Memorial Plaza mark the edge of the debris field and crash site, and the plaza is 1/4 mile in length and a one mile drive from the Visitor Center. The white marble Flight Path Walls mark the flight path, with the wooden Ceremonial Gate located between them. The Wall of Names, part of the Flight Path Walls, bears the names of the 40 passengers and crew engraved on white marble panels. A 0.7 mile trail winds through the Western Overlook down to the western side of the Memorial Plaza. Beyond the black wall and walkway, the 40-acre debris field and crash site is the final resting place of the passengers and crew. Flight 93 impacted in the area in front of the sandstone boulder, and the Western Overlook was the location of the command post for the investigation as well as multiple temporary memorials.
