Spring Creek Cemetery began on February 23, 1884, when Henry Scherer sold 6.6 acres of his farm homestead to the local West Chappel Methodist Episcopal Church of Spring Creek, an African-American organization. The deed said Scherer wished to promote public morality and religion, and it was commonly understood that the land would be used for a church building and cemetery. The church was never built, but an unknown number of burials took place there over the years. The cemetery, whose northern and western boundaries mostly follow the meanders of Spring Creek, stands on a high hill adjoining the northeast corner of Spring Creek Park in far north Harris County. On July 6, 1969, Harris County and West Chappel Methodist Episcopal Church agreed that the county would acquire the property. Over time, memories of the congregation, nearby community, and descendants faded, and few if any people realized the property had served as a cemetery for 85 years. Preserving the site offers an opportunity to illuminate local cultural heritage and community stories.
