In October 1844, seven Sager children reached this point on the Oregon Trail after a two thousand mile journey from Missouri during which their parents, Henry and Naomi Sager, had died. The six oldest, guided by a kindly doctor from their wagon train, arrived after seven arduous months with the dilapidated remains of their wagon, and the baby came several days later with another family. Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, who had lost their only child five years earlier, adopted all seven children. Three years later, in the 1847 Indian attack, the Sager girls were orphaned again when Marcus and Narcissa Whitman and the two Sager boys, John and Francis, were killed. The victims are buried together at the Great Grave.
