Cerro Alto Mountain
Nature
Cerro Alto Mountain stands in western Texas east of El Paso along U.S. Route 180 and is the highest point in the Hueco Mountains. Beyond its prominence in the landscape, it holds cultural importance in Tigua tradition. The awelo of the Tigua Indians is believed to reside near Cerro Alto Mountain, and that belief is said to reach back to the Tigua people's arrival in the region in the 17th century. The mountain is significant both as a geographic landmark and as a place tied to long-held spiritual tradition.
