Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, New York, grew from Ralph E. Ogden’s 1960 museum of Hudson River School paintings into one of the United States’ leading settings for contemporary outdoor sculpture. Its course changed in 1967 with the acquisition of 13 works by David Smith, helping shift the collection into the surrounding landscape. Across about 500 acres, later expanded by major land donations, monumental works were placed in four main landscape zones and the terrain itself was reshaped to suit them. Important additions by artists including Mark di Suvero, Alexander Calder, Henry Moore, Richard Serra, and Maya Lin established the site as both museum and designed landscape.
