Olive Marie Lippoldt taught at Pocomoke Elementary School from 1984 to 1992, and the Olive Lippold Tidal Wetland Garden was designed by Don Maloy and Dr. Richie Shoemaker and dedicated in her memory for her contributions to the education and development of the youth of Pocomoke City. The garden is intended as a place where animals, plants, and humans live in harmony and where curiosity, exploration, and appreciation of the natural world can grow. It is tied to the bald cypress swamps along the Pocomoke River, among the northernmost occurrences of this ecosystem on the East Coast. These wetlands are characterized by saturated peaty soils, standing water, and black gum and cypress trees with knees. Wetlands such as bald cypress swamps help buffer rivers by filtering runoff from upland areas and floodwaters from large storm events. As water moves through the floodplain, it slows, allowing harmful chemicals, nutrients, and excess sediment to be filtered out before reaching rivers and bays. The site also emphasizes the threat posed by invasive species, which can overrun native habitats, and promotes early removal of invasives and the planting of native species to support regional wildlife and hydrology.
