Ajo Peak rises 2,619 feet in Arizona’s north and east Sonoran Desert within the Little Ajo Mountains, north of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument near the town of Ajo. Along with nearby summits such as Cardigan Peak and North Ajo Peak, it is part of a rugged desert range. The peak is especially significant for sitting on a triple divide, where runoff separates in three directions into two desert drainage systems. Water moves through valleys and washes around the surrounding ranges or toward the headwaters of Tenmile Wash, but these intermittent flows disappear before reaching the Gila River Valley. Its O'odham names reflect deep Indigenous presence in the landscape.
