Fort Neoheroka, also called Neoheroka or Nooherooka and known in Tuscarora as Neyuherú·kęʼ, was a Tuscarora stronghold in what is now Greene County, North Carolina, and a central site in the final phase of the Tuscarora War. In March 1713, a force from South Carolina under Colonel James Moore, made up mainly of Native allies including Yamasee, Apalachee, Catawba, and Cherokee, besieged the fort for more than three weeks before destroying it. Hundreds of Tuscarora died in the fire, about 170 were killed outside, and around 400 were taken to South Carolina and sold into slavery. The defeat shattered Tuscarora power in the colony and helped open North Carolina’s interior to further colonial settlement.
