The Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home in Hillsville was originally built by Fielden Lewis Hale in 1845 as a three-story, thirteen-room house of federalist design, balanced by chimneys on the north and south sides. While serving in the Confederate Army, Captain Hale sold the home to James Wilkinson in 1864 for ten thousand Confederate dollars, and the Wilkinson family lived there during part of and after the War Between the States. James Wilkinson’s daughter Mayetta married George Lafayette Carter, and they and their son James Walter became the third and last family to live in the house. George L. Carter added fourth and fifth floors, renovated the house in a colonial style, and covered the exterior with stucco. After Mayetta Carter died on January 10, 1957, Carroll County used the house for offices. When the county offices moved, the house faced an uncertain future until Evelyn Hawks Botschen led the creation of the Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home Foundation, Inc. as part of a plan to save it that was presented to the County Board of Supervisors on February 14, 2001.
