Mount Margaret is a 5,850-foot summit in southwestern Washington’s Cascade Range, within the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument and Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Named before 1900 for pioneering Toledo resident Margaret "Maggie" Shultz Layton, it rises north of Spirit Lake and Mount St. Helens, with runoff feeding the North Fork Toutle River system. Its landscape reflects long volcanic, tectonic, and glacial shaping, but it also shows the more recent force of the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption, whose lateral blast stripped vegetation from its slopes. Today, the mountain stands within a dramatic recovery zone, with trails, frequent ash, and broad views of heavily altered terrain.
