Driskill Mountain, in Bienville Parish southeast of Bryceland, is Louisiana’s highest natural summit at 535 feet above sea level, a distinction that stands out in one of the nation’s flattest states. Its summit is marked by a large pile of rocks, and geologically it was shaped by erosion of unlithified Paleogene sediment, with quartz sands of the Cockfield Formation over the Cook Mountain Formation. Wild azalea and dogwood grow on the mountaintop. The mountain was named for James Christopher Driskill, who bought land including it in 1859. His family’s history in the area endured through Civil War losses, and descendants still live nearby.
