James Maitland Stewart was a legendary American actor born and raised in this town. During his long career from 1932-1991, Jimmy Stewart achieved fame on stage, screen, and TV. He won an Academy Award for his role in "The Philadelphia Story." Other films included "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," "It's a Wonderful Life," and "Harvey." He flew 20 combat missions in World War II, rose to Brigadier General in the Air Force Reserve, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985.
