The Vermillion meteorite, found near Vermillion, Kansas, is a stony-iron meteorite classified as a pallasite. Two farmers discovered it in 1991 while planting in a grain field, and it was first recognized as a meteorite in 1995. By volume, it consists of about 86 percent meteoric iron and 14 percent silicate minerals, chiefly olivine, with smaller amounts of orthopyroxene, chromite, and merrillite, plus accessory troilite, whitlockite, and cohenite. Its scientific importance rests on its rarity as one of only two members of the pyroxene pallasite grouplet, a classification tied to pyroxene and a shared oxygen isotope signature with Yamato 8451, though some chemical differences have led to debate.
