Those who fought and died in Vietnam included Nelson Earl Van Gundy, Philip Henry Rathe, Gary Don Shields, Benny Lee Butler, Robert Joe Overmyer, Dale Earl Shumbarger, Stanley Robert Hutchison, Michael Keith Friese, Terry William Shoot, Joseph Robert Pierce, Robert Gene Hoop, August Emil Czerwonka, Michael Paul Simpson, Donnie Joe Clough, Lowell Williams, George Ray Morrison, and James Larry Phipps, who was listed as MIA/KIA. Vietnam veterans also expressed pride in being veterans and in those veterans, frustration about their treatment at home, and a sense of sacrifice that did not seem to end, regarding these feelings as what Vietnam represented to them, while holding that for those who fought for freedom, freedom is something the protected will never know.
