Founded in May 1883, one year before Scurry County was organized, this pioneer congregation helped pave the way for modern Baptist worship in the area. It was originally named Bledsoe Baptist Church in honor of founder John S. Bledsoe, and its first pastor, the Rev. J. G. Garrard, served from 1883 to 1890 while worship was held in the school building on alternate Sundays. On December 8, 1892, the congregation voted to change its name to First Baptist Church of Snyder. In 1892, Lot 4 of Block 14 in the original Snyder townsite was purchased, and it has remained the site of four successive church buildings. The first was a one-story frame forty by sixty foot building with a bell tower. In 1914 it was replaced by a large frame tabernacle with sliding windows that opened to admit cool breezes. In 1922 the tabernacle gave way to a two-story yellow brick building, and additional property on the west side was bought for a pastor's home. The fourth sanctuary was built in 1951 on the former site of the pastor's house, and the present building complex includes the remodeled 1922 church and a 1958 education plant.
