Mountain Gateway Museum and Heritage Center in Old Fort, North Carolina, preserves Southern Appalachian heritage and the culture and history of western North Carolina. Part of the North Carolina Museum of History system, it occupies a stone building built in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration. Its exhibits use antique tools, household objects, and photographs to explore everyday mountain life, while two relocated historic log cabins extend that interpretation outdoors. With an outdoor amphitheatre hosting craft demonstrations, folk music, concerts, and farming-related presentations, the site serves as both a museum and an active cultural center. Admission is free, and it is open year-round.
