Major General James Ewell Brown Stuart, C.S.A., fell mortally wounded near this spot on May 11, 1864. About thirty feet from where he fell, his cavalrymen erected a monument in his memory, and it was dedicated on June 18, 1888, by Virginia Governor Fitzhugh Lee, a former division commander in Stuart’s cavalry. It was re-dedicated on May 9, 1964.
